E-magy has become part of BEPA, an European battery platform uniting all stakeholders who strive for a competitive EU industrial battery value chain. We will be part of the BEPA working group “Advanced Materials and Manufacturing”.
Better batteries play a major role in making electric driving accessible for more people, accelerating the transition towards a low-carbon economy. There are various promising material techniques to improve the performance of the next generation batteries. Bringing the know-how and expertise of partners with varying backgrounds together is key to stimulate the progress of these new solutions.
Coordinating battery Research & Innovation efforts across Europe
Beginning 2021, the Batteries European Partnership Association that is established under Horizon Europe, started its Research and Innovation mission to support the EU net-zero roadmap. Since then, more than 178 private stakeholders have joined the initiative. It aims to achieve a competitive and sustainable European industrial value-chain for e-mobility and stationary applications.
Some of its key objectives are:
- increase battery energy density
- increase battery power density and charging rate
- improve cycle lifetime
- reduce battery cost
- enhance the sustainability of the main supply chains of battery raw materials
In order to organise the work within BEPA and to achieve the objectives of the partnership, different expert groups have been established. Bringing together industry, research and other organisations’ experts, the working group members discuss the Research & Innovation priorities that need to be addressed in the coming years in Horizon Europe. E-magy has joined the working group “Advanced Materials and Manufacturing”.
Silicon anode technology for next generation batteries
Since more than two decades, scientists have recognized silicon to be able to boost energy density of lithium-ion batteries, as it has roughly ten times more storage capacity than graphite. However, difficulty in managing silicon’s properties has prevented the technology from being applied at scale for a long time. The last couple of years this has changed rapidly. As there is a huge demand to develop lighter and more efficient batteries, using silicon for batteries has quickly progressed. Silicon anode technology is currently on the roadmap of every major automotive manufacturer as it has huge potential benefits: it can store up to 10 times more lithium ions than graphite, it has fast charging capacities and a reduced internal resistance.
